St. Patrick’s Day Parade

  • Hillsboro United States (map)

Murphy’s produces the parade every year as a thank you to the Washington County Community.

The St Patrick’s Parade originated in 1979 as a Hillsboro Chamber project to promote retail trade, with Ruth Murphy as project chair and the Portland Timbers Soccer Club as Grand Marshall. Mary and Kathy, daughters of Murphy’s Furniture founder, Ruth Murphy, believe it’s important to provide the parade as a symbol of the hope brought with Spring and consider this community event a privilege to present. This year’s parade promises to be just as loaded with royalty. Past participants include: St. Paul, Columbia County and Tillamook County Fair Rodeo Courts as well as The Budweiser Clydesdales and Ronald McDonald himself! Royalty comes in many forms, demonstrated with one entry already set to appear; the highly acclaimed Scott Pipe Band. Robin Scott, formerly a piper to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and his fully outfitted Pipe Band, in full uniform and colorful Scot clan tartan and chanter. The 17 member Scottish Pipe Band can often be enjoyed at the King’s Head Pub in Forest Grove on Sunday afternoons.

Murphy’s encourages local businesses and organizations to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to “celebrate your businesses survival” and promote yourself in a fun way. This was the purpose of the original celebration, and it’s a good time to revisit past successes. Your entry could be extravagant, like the fully outfitted Equestrian Entries from area Rodeo Royalty. These fully tricked out beauties (human and animal) spare no expense in their fabulous regalia and floral arrangements. The entry could be simple, like past year’s entry from Hillsboro Parent Preschool, consisting of Bedazzled Tot’s being towed in wagons by their parents. You may be as professional as the light-footed leprechauns of Forest Grove Dance Arts or as Chaotic as the Notorious Tom & Eric’s Tournament of Thrills Motorcycle Drill Team. Families have been known to form their own entry and get 60 minutes of fame while building fond memories that are treasured for decades.

The March 16th Parade preparations will kick off with staging beginning at 9A.M. in the parking lot across from Hare Field, at 1151 NE Grant Street in Hillsboro. The parade will then start at 11 A.M. The parade procession will proceed from Hare Field east to Cornell Road, south on Cornell to Main Street, west on Main to 2nd Ave, north on 2nd to Grant Street, and east back to Hare Field. All of the $20 parade entry fee will go to the Hillsboro Boys and Girls Club.

Keep your eyes open for the Lucky Leprechauns who will be handing out lucky numbers along the parade route. The Lucky Number will be changed weekly and posted at Murphy’s Furniture. If the number posted matches the number on the parade flyer the winner will receive a special prize of Murphy Money.

There is still time to get in the parade. Gather your family and friends and put together your own spectacle. Entry forms are available at Hillsboro and Forest Grove Chamber offices or at Murphy’s Furniture in Cornelius.
